Welcome Back to School

Canyon Elementary Families,

Welcome Back!
I am so excited to officially welcome you to the 2025–26 school year! This is my first year as Principal at Canyon, and I’m truly thrilled to get to know each of you. There’s nothing better than building strong relationships with students and their families. Please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself—I’d love to meet you!

In the time I’ve spent in the community so far, I’ve been so impressed by the kindness and passion I’ve seen. It’s clear that Canyon families want the very best for our students. This spirit reflects our Canyon Code: Canyon Colts are valued, safe, kind, and responsible learners. As we prepare for the school year, here’s some important information to help your family get ready for the first day of school: Wednesday, August 20.

Back-to-School Night

Monday, August 18 | 6-6:15 Back to School Meeting in Gym- 6:15-7:15 PM Open House

This will be an open-house format where teachers will be in their classrooms to greet students and families. While teachers will be excited to meet everyone, they won’t have time for in-depth conversations. If you have specific topics to discuss, please schedule a separate meeting with your child’s teacher.

Welcome Our New Staff!

We’re excited to welcome the following new team members to Canyon:

  • Allison Lefler, 2nd Grade Teacher-Afternoons with Holli Hall

  • Susan Farmer, 4th Grade Teacher

  • Tony Bruno, 6th Grade Teacher

  • Janis Walker, SpEd Resource Teacher

  • Sheldon Chatelain, Speech and Language Pathologist

  • Alyse Allan, School Support Leader – a new district position designed to support administration, interventions, classroom teachers, and paraprofessionals.

  • Cally Graham, Interventionist – A teaching role that supports students, teachers, and paras in grades K–6.

We’re thrilled to have them on board!

Class Lists

We will be sending class assignments a little differently this year. Instead of posting class lists at the school, you will receive your student’s class assignment via email on August 7. This email will be sent to the parent’s email address listed in PowerSchool.

Because this and other important information will be sent via email, you must log into your child’s PowerSchool account to verify that their email address and all contact information are accurate and up to date.

School Communication

You’ll receive general information, reminders, and updates via email, phone calls, and text messages throughout the year. To receive text messages, you must update your preferences in your parent account. Please log in to verify that your contact information and emergency contacts are current.

School Hours

  • Monday–Thursday: 9:05 AM–3:35 PM

  • Friday (Early Release): 9:05 AM–2:20 PM

Students may not be dropped off before 8:35 AM, as there is no supervision available. Please plan to pick up students promptly at dismissal times.

PTA Updates

Our amazing PTA has Canyon shirts and hats for sale to celebrate our 20th anniversary—orders are due by Thursday, July 31 to ensure pick-up availability at Back-to-School Night. They’ll also have a fun punch card activity with prizes that evening. Be sure to stop by their table to check out merchandise and sign up for volunteer opportunities. Safety First

Safety is our top priority. Starting the first day of school, all exterior doors will be locked during the school day. Visitors must use the call-in system and sign in at the front office.

To minimize classroom disruptions:

  • Make sure your children arrive on time. The first bell rings at 9:00 AM, 9:05 AM tardy bell.

  • Please schedule appointments outside school hours when possible.

  • If you need to check your child out early, call ahead so we can have them ready.

  • Please check students out before 3:15 PM (or before 2:00 PM on Fridays)

We cannot deliver messages to students after 3:00 PM. Please call earlier in the day if needed.

Thanks for your help to ensure we can accommodate your needs at the end of the day, when we are shorthanded in the office.

Free & Reduced Lunch Applications

We encourage all families to apply for free or reduced lunch, even if you're unsure whether you qualify. Your application helps support our school’s funding as a Title I school. All applications are confidential and must be completed online at the District’s website Free and Reduced-Price Lunch Information and Applications)(available Aug 1).  All school-aged children in income-eligible households can receive meal benefits regardless of the immigration status of household members.

Information provided by the household will not be used for immigration-related purposes.

District Policies

Please take time to review the following policies with your children:

Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

Safety First!

  • Use the curb lane for student drop-off/pick-up. Students should exit the curbside only.
  • Do not allow students to run across the street. Students should wait on the curb for pick-up.
  • Pull all the way forward and form a single line on the west side of the road.
  • You may also park in the church parking lot next door if you'd like to walk your student in or avoid the line.
