Canyon Elementary SCC Meeting Minutes for Sept 23, 2025

Meeting convened at 3:51pm

Members Present: Alyssa Reidhead, Christy Magelby, Tiffany Farnsworth, Shanda Baldwin, Diana King, Roger Pulsipher (school board member), Jennifer Scott, Holly Corbridge

 Not Present: Katie DeMonja, Janessa McDaniel, Ashley Summers, Ann Marie Birkholz

Review of Prior Meeting Minutes - 4th Tuesday of each month (some date changes)

 

Discussion Items:  

• Welcome and Introductions
• Review of Recommended Timeline
• Elect a Chair/Co-Chair (Chair must be a parent) Chair: Alyssa Reidhead (motion by Jen Scott,, seconded by Kristy Magelby.  7 votes yay, no nays;  Tiffany Farnsworth (motion by Alyssa Reidhead, seconded by Diana King), District Community Council representative will be Alyssa Reidhead
• Discussion and Approval of Rules of Order and Procedure
  Motion by Alyssa to review the rules, seconded by Tiffany.

Discussion:  School Employee should be elected,not appointed. Janessa will continue next year; change from 2 to 4 parent members elected in odd years; a quorum majority will be 6 people; what will our process be for replacing a council member mid-year?  We will consult the previous voting numbers and choose the next person in line.  A council member can be replaced if they do not attend 2 consecutive meetings.

Motion to approve the changes:  Shanda Baldwin; seconded by Diana King. 7 yays, 0 nays.

• Review of Title One Plan, Compact, and Parent Engagement

Motion to approve the compact: Diana King, seconded by Jennifer Scott; 

Discussion: A couple of typos was fixed on the document; 

Voted to adopt: 7 yays, 0 nays

Canyon Y26 Title I Plan

Review:  Add Alyssa Reidhead and Ann Marie Birkholz to the plan; discussion of Math and Reading goals; discussion about how the i-Ready goals are based on the diagnostic, not the daily practice data; much of the TItle 1 funds have been directed towards Paraprofessional support.  Some wording was removed that referred to the After-School Club that is no longer offered.  Discussion about how STEM is funded.  

 

**Future discussion on how to make parents accountable, as related to the school goals, and how fundraiser funds are allocated.

Discussion about how to get more parents to fill out the free and reduced lunch. We are currently at 34%, we need 40 % to qualify

Review of Prior Meeting Minutes - Sept 23 minutes- Jennifer Scott

 

Discussion Items:  

• Welcome
• Update from District SCC- Alyssa Spill the Sweet Tea, Hyde Park Update, phone policy review, bring any concerns for Alyssa’s next meeting in January. 
• Review of Rules of Order and Procedures- we don’t need to vote on everything, only on certain items like school land trust
• Title I status- needed 40%, only made it to 38%. No grace period, looking to get a waiver. 
• Canyon Teacher of the Year- November 20 at School Board Meeting 5:30-6:30-Kennedy Fielding 5th Grade
• Review of Fundraising Allocations- Focusing money on student leadership, behaviors, field trips. Discussed increasing the transparency of this money. School Trust Land video fundraiser, winners win $2500. Kristy can put it together? 
• CSI Process Update- Working on student engagement with Innovations Ed. Watched example videos. 
• Student Pick Up- Drop off/ Pick up Bus is always late. Discussed front door-entry. Clarification on safe routes. We will be defining a safe route for next meeting. 
• Classroom Communication- postponed to next months agenda.

Discussion Items:  

• Welcome
• Marci Bowen- Safety Lessons are broken up K-3 and 4-6. Lessons cover all aspects of safety, especially safety within technology. commonsense.org, netsmarts are websites where some lessons come from. 

 

• Classroom Communication- what are the expectations of homework at home. Talked about families reading together. Focus on wholesome activities at home. Talked about sending home information on character building. More information coming from the superintendent on a social skills curriculum. 

 

• Safe Routes- Review Map- We discussed no left turn in front of the school. Church parking lot North West entrance only. No drop off in teacher parking lots. Maybe two 

 

• PBIS- Tier 1: Teach and reinforce the expectations for all areas. Tier 2: Incident Reports. Increase minor incident reporting. We have reporting for major incidents. Needs assessment to come by February 2026. Attendance goal is less of a focus, but we will promote the states campaign. Training subs on Tier 1 and TIer 2

*Attendance percentages? Will report on those next meeting.

Review of Prior Meeting Minutes - Holly

Discussion Items:  

• Welcome
• New Rule of Order and Procedures-Update: specific date for electing new members to SCC by September 14, returning members notify committee prior to the first day of school, changed voting by google form to ballot; 
• Safe Routes: decided only to put 2 cones at the church parking lot so no one drives in or out of that driveway; leave the rest until next year;  
• MOY Data 
  • Acadience: Staff is digging in to make sure we are making growth; Holly will discuss with Steering committee about encouraging parents, or having some regulations about using Reflex and iReady at home.
  • RISE: using i-Ready to gauge where we will score in RISE; 
  • Attendance: looking into correlation between attendance and scores and growth; we are improving slowly; still concerned about attendance and behavior; considering attendance parties to encourage attendance;

Discuss how 2nd grade deals with missed attendance
