April 2024 Minutes
Canyon Elementary\ SCC Meeting Minutes
Monday, April 15, 2024 Rescheduled to Monday, April 22, 2024 @ 3:45pm
Meeting convened at 3:50pm
Members Present: Britta Brown, Marie Elegante, Emily Webb, Cami Davis, Cambree Clare, Leslie Burt
Members Absent: Jackie Lopez, Sarah Potter
Discussion Items:
1. SCC Membership Spring Elections for Upcoming School year 2024-25 are due by May 3, 2024. If we have only 2-3 applicants we will not need to hold an election. Jackie Lopez has expressed that her new work schedule will no longer make it possible for her to continue on the Council. Additionally, Cambree Clare’s term is up and we will need new school faculty members. We discussed including 2 faculty members. Mrs. Burt will work on getting these nominations.
2. Follow up Discussion about Parent Drop off/Pick up safety issues.
- Some of the biggest challenges discussed was the lineup of cars down 1300 east to the north which also causes problems with the crosswalk and cars in the church parking lot. Additionally cars trying to turn left into the parent pick up from 1300 east back things up. Another concern was that once in the parent pick up line the cars do not pull all the way forward along the curb. Some concern about parents picking up along 300 south which is not designated for pick up.
- Possible solutions discussed was to collect some data about the number of vehicles that come through the parent pick up as well as the amount of time from first vehicle pick up to final vehicle pick up. Additionally it might be helpful to see how much time is spent in the line for pick up. Once students start getting picked up it actually seems to go rather quickly. The biggest issues seem to be in the afternoon. In the morning it is more spaced out. We might also want to designate some other problem areas to collect data. We could get help from the PTA to get some volunteers to help collect this data. It was suggested that in the morning having two locations for students to enter might help as well.
- Suggestions were made to work on creating a Parent training video to share on the website and to push out to parents at strategic times such as August, January, April. We might also want to get signage to remind parents to pull up. We do have a hand held sign that teachers can use.
- The question was raised about getting officer support to help traffic flow and enforcement.
3. Additional Items for Discussion? An issue was brought up to possibly consider in the future about looking into how much time students spend on screens during the school day. Principal suggested that this would likely be a smaller percentage of time with younger students and still a pretty minimal time with older students although technology use has definitely increased over the past few years as more curriculum and assignments are online.
Meeting adjourned at 4:45pm
Next Meeting: No more meetings this school year - Thank you for your support!

Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes - 1st: Britta Brown 2nd: Marie Elegante
Discussion Items:
1. Discussion about 2024-25 school year Land Trust Plan
- Review Final Report for 2022-23
- Last time we talked about math and reading goals with a shift in our measurement system as per what is available to us. Measurements are currently taken using benchmarks.
- Looking at the reading percentages there is a downward trend as the grades go up. Some of this is due to any gaps students have are becoming more apparent as the material and application of that material becomes increasingly difficult.
- Overall 72% of students at Canyon are showing improvement in reading.
- In math assessment overall 73% of all students are showing typical growth.
- Money was allocated to technology and math aides to help with decreases in growth percentage on the RISE from last year.
- We had a good amount of students pass the WIDA (23%) of all ELL students pass the WIDA. However, that is not translating to progression on the RISE.
- Review and Approve Proposed Plan for 2024-25
- Two main goals. We would like to focus everyone’s attention on those goals. Action Taken: Growth Score bumped up to 75% of students showing typical growth in Reading.
- We will focus our actions on people and technology.
- ELL aids in Classrooms
- Money to the Library for books ($2,000)
- New Language program for K-5 (Wonders)
- Math Goal 75% of all students will show typical growth.
- Half Day PLC’s with Grade level teams once a month to plan, prepare and solve problems.
- License for Reflex. and Gizmos.
- Teachers will utilize math strategies to help deepen understanding of concepts.
- Salaries and benefits for aides.
- Technology and licenses for chromebooks.
- Britta Brown called for a vote to approve the plan. Leslie seconded the motion and the group voted unanimously to approve the plan.
2. SCC Membership Spring Elections for Upcoming School year 2024-25
- Applications/Nominations open - April 8, 2024 [following Spring Break]
- Applications/Nominations due - May 3, 2024
- # of member positions to fill: We would like to have at least 3 people to add to the committee. We would like to keep people for about three years and rotate half at a time.
- Would it help for teachers to recommend names of parents that would be great additions to the SCC? Cambree
- The group agreed and felt it was valuable information for parents to have and be participants in.
- We will send a note home letting parents know as well as an electronic version.
- If interested, current outgoing members may apply for another 2 year term
- Please encourage community members you know to submit their names to serve on the SCC beginning next school year.
3. Additional Items for Discussion?
- In April would be a good meeting to follow up on items discussed at previous meetings including the School Safety Plan. [Britta]
- Concerns about screen time were raised as far as how much class time is being spent on screens. The group would like to follow up with information on how much screen time they are getting in class.
- Could we have someone come and do a parent night about technology dangers and information?

Pathways of Progress helps us compare growth for each student in relation to students that started at the same spot at the beginning of the school year.

This helps us celebrate growth and also identify students who need more intensive interventions.
-

-
Math goals will be based on grade levels using the iReady Diagnostic test.
-
Leslie has proposed that the goals be very similar to last year's goals.
-
We will then need to identify how those funds will be allocated.
-
It is proposed that the majority of those funds will be allocated to having aides to help in classrooms.
-
Money has also been allocated to the RC program, Media Center and the updating of Chromebooks.
-
This spring we will likely be looking at a surplus sale for Chromebooks and technology that the district will be sunsetting.
-
